Series; Snow, Moon, and Flowers with Valiant Warriors
Snow at Yoshino, 1867 - Terrific triptych illustrating a famous episode from the life of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Facing an attack by warrior monks, Yoshitsune's brave retainer Sato Tadanobu disguised himself in his master's armor to allow him to escape. Here, the great samurai takes a stand beneath a snowy pine tree outside the shrine on Mt. Yoshino, gripping his sword above his hands with both hands. He has just sliced through the naginata of the priest Yokogawa Kakuhan at left, sending his attacker tumbling backwards through the snow. Another monk kneels in the snow at right, eyes blazing, his monk's mantle whipping in the wind. Clumps of snow fall from the trees overhead, knocked loose by the commotion, a striking contrast to the dark night sky. An icy waterfall rushes through the landscape at right. A fantastic composition with a stunning natural setting. A great subject for a samurai enthusiast and a fine early Yoshitoshi warrior design. Includes a dusting of mica across the top of the dark night sky.
