Comments - Terrific panoramic view of the New Shimabara licensed quarter in the Tsukiji area of Tokyo, which opened in 1869 to serve foreigners, taking its name from the long established Shimabara pleasure district in Kyoto. At top center, the entrance gate opens onto a central boulevard with blossoming cherry trees, the streets lined with teahouses and brothels. A few oiran or high-ranking courtesans stroll about accompanied by their kamuro or child apprentices, with both foreigners and Japanese crowding the roads. A fascinating image with wonderful detail, each establishment identified with a red cartouche. The New Shimabara was short-lived, however, attracting few foreigners and closing after about a year. An intriguing historic image of Tokyo in the early Meiji era.
