Series; Combined Pictures and Calligraphy of Actor-Poets

Sawamura Chojuru III as Kan Shujo, 1848 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Sawamura Chojuru III as the scholar and calligrapher Kan Shujo (Sugawara no Michizane). He looks over his shoulder with a wary frown, his brows furrowed. He wears a tan tunic with a crest of yellow circles, over a red under robe with an embossed white collar. His hair is pulled into a neat topknot, tied the full length with a cord. A panel at right features a verse in the actor's own calligraphy. An interesting design from this rarely seen series, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Stitching holes at left edge from previous binding, a few small wormholes, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and rubbing, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
