The 47 Ronin, Act 7: The Ichiriki Teahouse in Gion, 1854

Comments - Dramatic scene from Act 7 of the classic kabuki drama "Kanadehon Chushingura" of the samurai Teraoka Heiemon attacking his sister, the beauty Okaru, outside the Ichiriki Teahouse. After Yuranosuke accused the courtesan of spying on him, Heiemon vowed to kill her to demonstrate his loyalty to the vendetta. He raises his sword above his head, waving it threateningly as the frightened woman tosses a packet of tissues at him. Her eyes are wide, her mouth slightly agape as she recoils from his anger. In the background, Yuranosuke peers around the edge of a sliding shoji panel, looking into an empty room. The actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III as Okaru, Bando Hikosaburo IV as Teraoka Heiemon, and Morita Kan'ya XI as Yuranosuke. An intriguing image with expressive figures and soft bokashi shading.
