Taking Shelter from the Rain in a Sudden Shower, 1854

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of a group of men and women seeking shelter from a sudden rain shower under a large tree. At right, a commoner runs forward holding his eyes with his hands, frightened by the thunder. Behind him a young couple stands under an umbrella, both looking miserably unhappy. In the center, a monkey, wearing a kimono and eating a snack, perches on the shoulder of the beauty, while at left, a beauty looks up at the Thunder God Raijin, who peers down from a dark cloud, surrounded by his drums. The right panel features Arashi Kichisaburo III as Wakato Hatsuemon, Onoe Baiko IV as Yokogushi no Otomi, and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Mukokizu no Yosa. A wonderful scene with beautiful color, expressive faces, and fine shading in the background. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
