Matsunoo, between Tsuchiyama and Minakuchi: Matsumoto Koshiro V as Matsuomaru

Series: The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, 1852

Matsunoo, between Tsuchiyama and Minakuchi: Matsumoto Koshiro V as Matsuomaru - Terrific kabuki image of the actor Matsumoto Koshiro V portraying Matsuomaru, one of the samurai triplets in the popular play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami." The brothers become the victims of divided loyalties following the treacherous downfall of their sponsor, Sugawara, at the hands of Matsuomaru's employer, Shihei. Matsuomaru is shown in profile, an unusual format, his voluminous robes filling the page and giving him an imposing presence. He stares straight ahead, frowning just slightly, a tall court cap on his head. The title cartouche features a royal cart, which features prominently in the play. A fantastic portrait with fine cloth embossing in the white robe and the white of the cap.
