Second Month: First Day of the Horse Festival, 1890 - Wonderful depiction of the "First Day of the Horse Festival" (Hatsuuma), dedicated to Inari, Shinto deity of foxes, rice, and agriculture. People worship at shrines dedicated to Inari, praying at the start of the agricultural year for a good harvest. Here, visitors crowd a shrine, with a tall stone torii gate at left. At right, a play takes place on an elevated pavilion, with one of the main characters a fox with a shaggy red wig. In the background at center, another tableau depicts foxes as the famous Soga Brothers. At lower left, a young boy carries an ema or votive plaque with foxes on it, while the beauty beside him carries a child wearing a red tam on her back. Paper lanterns, and a row of lights with figures on them at left add a festive air. A terrific design we've never seen before, with beautiful color and detail. Includes burnishing in the black coats and fine bokashi shading in the night sky.
