From an untitled series of half-length actor portraits on battledores
The Female Bandit Kishin Omatsu, 1862 - Fantastic portrait of an Iwai Kumesaburo in the role of the female bandit Kishin Omatsu. She tenderly cradles a small child to her chest, the baby wrapped inside her kimono, as she looks over her shoulder with a smile. Over her armor she wears a beautiful black kimono featuring a design of pine branches and slanting rain drops. Her hair is pulled back into an unusual fan shape behind her head, the longer hair tied into a loose knot over her shoulders with loose strands framing her face. The portrait is set into a battledore used for a traditional Japanese game similar to badminton, a feathered shuttlecock at lower right and a large decorative ball at left. Beautifully detailed with burnishing in the black kimono, and intricate line work in the hairstyle, armor, and pattern on the ball. A striking design with lovely color and soft shading.
