Beauties in the Yoshiwara, 1861

Comments - Wonderful Yoshiwara scene of courtesans in a teahouse, the rooms overlooking a garden with an arched bridge over a pond. In the center, a young girl gestures as she chats with a beauty, a ceramic vase in her hand. At left, a courtesan reads a long letter, smiling as she looks down, while other women watch the activities from the upper story behind her. Several women in blue and white cotton robes relax on the bridge and verandah behind them, enjoying the cool evening air. Inside the bathhouse, a man gets his back scrubbed while another soaks in a hot tub. A lovely subject with a beautifully detailed setting
