Beauties in an Evening Garden, 1889

Comments - Lovely triptych of beauties in an evening garden, jointly designed by Kunichika and Hiroshige III. A courtesan stands on the porch of a house at right, enjoying a view of the full moon beyond the pine trees at left, a pipe in hand. She wears a blue kimono shaded to gray and bordered with leaves and blossoms, with a red tie-dyed collar, tied with a pink sash. A young girl kneels at her side holding a tobacco set. In the center, a woman carries a lamp which casts a soft shaft of warm light up into the night sky, one end of her green brocade obi looped over her arm. In the distance, an angled bridge leads over a pond, with stone lanterns at the water's edge and tall pine trees framing the view. A lovely night scene, attractively colored and detailed with fine bokashi shading.
