The Kyoka Tokaido - After the incredible success of his original "Hoeido Tokaido" in the early 1830s, Hiroshige released several other series illustrating life along the famed Tokaido Road. He designed this chuban-sized series in the late 1830s - early 1840s, published by Sanoki. Each design features a comic poem called a "kyoka," so the series is called the "Kyoka Tokaido." It is sometimes known as the "Sanoki Tokaido" after the publisher. A great look at travelers making this historic journey in nineteenth-century Japan, featuring striking scenic views and more intimate scenes of life along the Tokaido. This charming series is rarely seen.
