The Great Battle of the Minamoto and the Taira at Dan-no-ura, 1865

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the great naval Battle of Dan-no-ura between Minamoto and Taira forces. This unusual perspective shows two warriors swimming through an enormous wave in the foreground, each with a sword tied to his back. On the deck of the Taira ship at left, a samurai in full armor has just been hit with an arrow to the chest, his mouth open as he leans back in surprise. A retainer at his side reaches for him worriedly, shocked by the blow. Minamoto and Taira boats crowd the water, with hand-to-hand combat taking place on some of them. A dramatic interpretation of this famous conflict, beautifully detailed with soft shading in the water and sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A rare, early Yoshitoshi battle scene and a terrific subject for a collector.
