The Generous Type, 1859

Series; The Thirty-two Modern Types

The Generous Type, 1859 - Attractive portrait of a beauty applying makeup from a rarely seen Toyokuni III beauty series. She smoothes her eyebrow with one finger as she looks into a hand mirror, a brush between her other fingers. She smiles slightly, concentrating on her task. She wears an intricately detailed striped outer kimono over a red tie-dyed under robe with a white collar featuring toy balancing dolls. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth bun, adorned with many hairpins and a ribbon. The inset at upper left by Gengyo Miyagi features folded verses or lettered tied with ribbons. A handsome design, beautifully detailed with embossing in the white kimono collar, fine line work in the hair, and bokashi shading in the deep blue background.
