Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Sino-Japanese Naval Battle

Comments - Dramatic scene of a naval battle during the Sino-Japanese War. On the Japanese warship at right, sailors man a large gun on a pivot, firing shells at an enemy ship at left under the direction of an officer thrusting his sword high. The Chinese ship sinks beneath the waves as smoke and flames rise from the stern, sailors falling or jumping overboard into the churning waves below. A handsome composition with a nice sense of depth and fine bokashi shading.
