Battle on Horseback, 1897

Comments - Great scene of two warriors battling on horseback. In the foreground a warrior gallops past a blossoming cherry tree on a brown horse, the animal's mane, tail, and fringed red equipment trailing in the wind behind him. He stares ahead intently, gripping the reins with one hand and drawing back his sword with the other, several arrows protruding from his arm. He wears a fine suit of armor and a helmet topped with antlers and an animal figurine. His brown kimono and pants feature a delicate leaf pattern in silver mica. At left, his enemy approaches on a gray horse as arrows fly overhead, his bow in hand. A terrific composition with wonderful detail in the armor, including touches of burnishing.
