Imaginary Scene of Actors Catching Fireflies: Jewels Shining in the Dark, 1855

Comments - Terrific triptych depicting an imaginary gathering of actors catching fireflies along the edge of a winding stream. In the center, a beauty reaches up with a fan to swat at the insects glowing in the night sky. The young boy beside her carries an insect cage and waves his own folding fan. The fellow at left smoking a pipe smiles happily as he watches. The actors are dressed in informal summer cotton kimono and chunky wooden geta sandals. Tall grasses border the flowing water along with yellow and blue blossoms. From left, the actors are Bando Takesaburo I, Nakamura Fukusuke I, Ichimura Uzaemon XIII, Iwai Kumesaburo III, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, and Kataoka Gado II. An attractive image with wonderful color and detail, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
