Nobuo Satoh (1926 - 2005) Original Japanese Mezzotint Print
Shells, 1976

Mezzotints by Nobuo Satoh - Japanese artist Nobuo Satoh specialized mainly in mezzotints, an intaglio print process that results in rich, velvety deep tones. The artist uses a metal rocker with small teeth to create thousands of tiny dots in the surface of the metal printing plate, a labor intensive process. This surface holds a lot of ink, allowing deep colors and tones during printing. Satoh's lovely modern designs feature simple compositions and a limited range of colors or in monochrome. Each print is signed by the artist, dated, titled in Japanese, and numbered in pencil. A few of his prints have raised seals with his name and "Original Mezzotint." A great choice for display, and an interesting addition to a Japanese print collection.
