The Night Attack of the 47 Ronin

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the night attack on Moronao's palace by the 47 ronin. In the center, the ronin have dragged Moronao from his hiding place in a storage shed amidst tumbling bales of charcoal. Two samurai thrust spears at him, which Moronao grabs hold of with a grimace, while at third stands ready behind him with a raised sword. Another ronin blows a whistle to signal that they have found their enemy. Clumps of snow fall over the men as a retainer's head emerges from his perch in the tree overhead, an arrow piercing his shoulder. Fighting continues in the garden at upper left, with a full moon glowing overhead and geese in silhouette. The ronin wear their trademark black and white dogtooth bordered robes over their armor, and straw sandals for traction in the snow. A great dramatic design filled with energy, nicely colored and detailed.
