Attacking a Chinese Fortress

Comments - Dramatic Sino-Japanese War illustration of Japanese troops attacking a Chinese fortress. The soldiers rush across a stone parapet with bayonets fixed amidst clouds of smoke, several enemies tumbling back as they are shot. An officer urges his men forward at left, raising his sword high from astride a horse, a Japanese flag fluttering beside him. At top center a shell strikes the stone wall of the complex, exploding into flames and smoke and hurling debris and victims into the air.. At right, Chinese soldiers tumble over the edge of a tower as Japanese fire cannon from the emplacement. A terrific composition, wonderfully detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms and soft bokashi shading in the smoke and night sky.
