Comments - Great scene from the kabuki play "Kibi Daijin Shina Monagatari," a tale about Kibi Daijin or Minister Kibi, who was sent to China in the 8th century. The Chinese Emperor, shown here seated at right, challenged Kibi to play a game of go with a court minister. Although he had never played the game, he agreed, betting his life in exchange for learning the secrets of the Chinese calendar should he win. Kibi later brought go back to Japan. Here, he sits behind a red lacquer table holding the empty game board, calmly watching the agitated minister, who is alarmed by the large spider hanging over the table. Kibi wears a black robe with a beautiful burnished scroll design over full purple print pants, and a tall court cap, his white under robe detailed with embossing. The emperor , the minister, and a beauty are dressed in elegant clothes, the beauty's robe trimmed with layers of colorful ruffles. The right panel features Nakamura Shikan IV as Emperor Xuanzong and Sawamara Gennosuke IV as the beauty. A terrific image with wonderful detail and color.
