Camera Views: Picture of a Giant Elephant, 1861

Comments - Fantastic depiction of Westerners examining an elephant. The bearded man at left tentatively reaches out to touch the animal's trunk, while a young boy at lower right feels the elephant's leg. In the center, a woman leans forward with a smile, gesturing to the side. She wears a full red dress with a shawl draped over shoulders, and a hat adorned with ribbons and bows. This collaborative series by Yoshiiku and Gengyo Miyagi depicts a variety of foreign subjects, and also Western techniques such the shading in the elephant seen here. The border recalls an elaborately carved picture frame, further adding to the idea that the work is a faithful "photograph" or recording of the scene. A rare design from an unusual series. We've seen this subject elsewhere for more than $6,000!
