Series; Calligraphy and Pictures for the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, 1872

Calligraphy and Pictures for the Fifty-three Stations - Terrific design from a Tokaido Road series pairing images with verses in calligraphy for the different stations. Different artists contributed designs, including Yoshitora and Kunisada II. The large pictures include landscapes, figures from history and legend, and scenes from kabuki plays and folktales. Several prints feature comic illustrations, including the adventures and mishaps of Kita and Yaji, the bumbling travelers from the popular novel "Shank's Mare." Others include travelers in Western attire or distinctly modern Meiji subjects. These imaginative prints are beautifully detailed with attractive color and fine line work, and offer an interesting Meiji era take on the classic Tokaido subject. A great choice for collectors interested in life along the Tokaido Road.

Tsuchiyama in Omi Province: The Sorcery of Fujiwara Chikata - Fantastic Yoshitora design of the Heian nobleman Fujiwara no Chikata conjuring up the yonki or four devils to attack the Imperial Army. He sits with hands clasped before him, staring ahead intently, his long hair flowing wildly over his shoulders. His skin has a ghastly gray pallor, and he is dressed in fine court robes. The four horning oni or devils are the gold devil, wind devil, water devil, and stealth devil. They gather around their master, with leering grins and bulging muscles, gripping a variety of weapons. The inset at upper right shows travelers during a rain shower along the banks of a river. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. Incredible detail and vibrant color in this incredible design. A great choice for a samurai enthusiast or a collector interested in Japanese folklore and legend.
