Ghost of a Courtesan Emerging from the Sea, 1824 - 1839

Comments - Incredible kabuki scene of the ghost of a courtesan emerging from the sea to haunt the passengers on a boat. She rises up from the waves, her sleeves held to her chest, smiling as she looks down, her long hair falling over her shoulders and supernatural flames dancing around her. In the center, a samurai grips his sword with both hands as he faces the spirit, frowning angrily, his brows furrowed. The beauty at right grips the tiller of the boat with eyes wide as she watches in disbelief. At left, a daimyo sits on a cushion wearing an elegant blue floral robe, holding his weapon upright with a startled scowl. The left sheet includes Bando Tamasaburo I as the daimyo and Ichimura Uzaemon XII as the ghost. Bando Shuka I held the name Bando Tamasaburo from 1824 to 1839, placing the print during this time period. A terrific supernatural design with expressive figures and a great setting.
