Aristocrats Enjoying the Summer Cool, 1887

Comments - Fascinating view of the Meiji Emperor and Empress enjoying the summer cool on a moonlit evening at the palace. The emperor relaxes on a plush red soft at right, wearing a military uniform adorned with braided trim and a red sash, and a cap with the Meiji chrysanthemum on it. In the center, the empress smiles back at him over her shoulder. She is dressed in the latest European fashion, wearing dress with a fitted bodice and a large bustled overskirt, gloves, and a hat adorned with flowers, ribbons, and feathers. A large tree frames a view of the garden, with a narrow bridge crossing over the pond and a waterfall rushing over a rocky outcropping. A full moon glows in the night sky above. A charming design with wonderful color and detail, and an attractive setting with fine bokashi shading. Includes burnishing in the black uniform. We've never offered this subject before.
