Beauties on an Embankment, 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Shinzo Tsuribune kidan," featuring from left, Sawamura Chojuro V as Tsuribune no Sabu, Bando Shuka I as Danshichijima no Okaji, and Onoe Kikujiro II as Issunjima no Otatsu. The two beauties stand on the embankment of the river with their arms tucked into each others' robe, eyeing each other suspiciously. Each wears a boldly checked kimono tied with a solid color obi, and has a roll of tissues tucked into the waist. At left, Sabu scowls at them angrily as he tucks up the back of his kimono. Part of his hat is still tied around his chin while the other part rests on the ground nearby. Pleasure boats dot the river and red paper lanterns hang from the eaves of the teahouses lining the opposite shore. An atmospheric scene with fine shading in the water and sky, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
