From an untitled series of views of Kyoto
Fujishima Takeji - Although Fujishima Takeji initially studied traditional Shijo-style Japanese painting, he became interested in Western-style painting as a young man. After studying art in Paris and Rome between 1905 and 1910, he returned to Japan to develop his own romantic and impressionistic style within the yoga (Western-style) art movement. Famous for his oil paintings, Takeji did very few woodblock prints, which he carved and printed himself in the sosaku hanga manner. His prints are rarely seen in the market, and are a great choice for a collector interested in modern Japanese woodblocks.
Handsome winter view of the Demachi district after a light snow. The footprints of pedestrians dot the white snow, and tire tracks mark the center of the road. A rider on horseback crosses the bridge at lower left, contrasting with the modern bus arriving at the stop at right. Bare tree branches fill the wintry gray sky, with telephone and electric wires at upper left. A quiet observation of everyday life and the world around us.
