Washing Hands, 1856

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene of a beauty washing her hands on a verandah. She kneels on the floor as a young man pours a dipper of water over her outstretched hands. A basin of water rests nearby, and a blue and white towel hangs at upper right. She smiles up at him coyly, tilting her head, and he looks back with a rather sheepish expression. Her blue kimono is patterned with a pretty design of cherry blossoms and birds in flight. Behind her, a folding screen hides the bed, with a lamp on the floor and woodblock prints pasted to the sliding blue panels at the back of the room. The actor at left is Onoe Kikugoro IV as the beauty Onnadayu Okoyo. An interesting subject with wonderful detail.
