From the estate of a Parisian Collector

A Parisian Collector -   From an interesting group of nearly 200 prints that we just purchased from a Parisian estate. Included are some rare Meiji triptychs as well as a large selection of single subjects by Yoshitoshi, Hiroshige II, Kyosai, Kuniyoshi, Toyokuni III and others. The collection is especially notable for condition. The prints are crisp, clean, and beautiful - none have been displayed. These old estates are a great source for clean, hard to find designs.

Kinnara Sonja Holding a Hobbyhorse - Terrific portrait of a young beauty kneeling beside a game board for shoji (Japanese chess). She smiles as she looks up, her hands resting atop her legs. A platter of food, a teakettle, a teacup, game pieces, a pipe, and a tobacco pouch are scattered across the floor around her. This rarely seen Kuniyoshi series pairs beauties with rakans, Buddhist disciples who have achieved nirvana. Here, the rakan Kinnara Sonja appears on a hanging scroll at upper right, holding a hobbyhorse in one hand and the striped reins in the other, his head surrounded by a yellow halo. An attractive subject, nicely detailed.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. A few small marks, faint number in ink at corner of hanging scroll. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
