Jurojin: Onoe Kikugoro V as the White Sake Seller, 1886

Comments - Handsome design from an unusual Kunichika series pairing kabuki actors with the Seven Lucky Gods. Here, Onoe Kikugoro appears as the white sake seller Shimbei in the kabuki play "Sukeroku," looking ahead with an unhappy scowl. He wears a rust colored vest with writing on it over his kimono, a light blue cloth wrapped around his head. The scene above shows Jurojin, the god of longevity. He is shown reading a scroll, leaning against a large spotted deer, his traditional companion. An inset at right features a verse. A great design, nicely detailed.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Wormholes, repaired. Toning and staining, slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
