Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Otsu, circa 1847

Comments - Terrific scene taking place at Otsu along the Tokaido Road from the kabuki play "Ichidai banashi." At left, the famous bandit Nippon Daemon sits on a rock, staring intently down at a large toad dancing before him. He wears a tan kimono tucked into striped pants over a suit of armor, a cloth parcel tied over his torso. At right, the Buddhist holy man Nakasaina Sonja sits atop a rock in the shape of an enormous toad, scowling angrily, his begging bowl in hand. He wears colorful robes, an ornate beaded necklace, and earrings, a blue sash fastened around his upper arm. A dragon appears in the sky between the men, hovering in the night sky. From left, the actors are Sawamura Sojuro and Onoe Kikugoro III. A great supernatural scene with wonderful detail.
