Struggle beside a Palanquin, 1854

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a struggle taking place between the young Yoshida no Umewakamaru and Shinobu no Sota. The boy grabs a sash over his shoulder, lifting one foot as he prepares to move away. Sota holds onto the other end of the fabric with a dazed expressive as he stands beside a palanquin, his legs firmly planted apart. Pleasure boats are anchored along the opposite side of the shore, light shining from the teahouse windows above. A circular inset at upper left depicts a man frowning unhappily as he looks down. The actors include Sawamura Yoshijiro I as Umewakamaru and Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Sota. Nice wood grain impression in the night sky, and fine bokashi shading in the background.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 20 1/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels. A few small losses at edges, a few small wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
