Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Under Ryogoku Bridge, 1843 - 1846

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting boats under Ryogoku Bridge on a summer night. In the pleasure boat at left, two beauties play a hand game called ken, smiling and laughing as they gesture with their hands. Their tall wooden geta sandals are kicked off in the front of the boat, and a large paper lantern glows softly beneath the cabin roof. At right, a man in another boat dries himself with a towel as he watches the women. The large wooden pilings of the bridge frame the scene, the surface of the water gently rippling. A terrific composition and a great image of a favorite summer activity to escape the heat of the city.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 30" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few wormholes, small loss at one corner, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases and slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
