Minamoto no Yorimitsu on Mt. Oe, 1858

Comments - Fantastic triptych from the legendary tale of the Demon of Oeyama, the horrible Shuten-doji, who kidnapped young beauties and held them hostage in his lair on Mt. Oe near Kyoto. The great warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) and his men traveled to the demon's hideout in order to kill him. After lulling him into a drunken stupor, Raiko will cut off the monster's head. Here, Shuten-doji relaxes on a verandah overlooking the valley, holding a giant cup of sake and enjoying a sumptuous banquet, surrounded by beauties and grimacing red, blue, and green demons. In the center, Raiko performs a dance for him, hopping on one foot and waving his fan. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A terrific, lively design with wonderful detail.
