Beauties Watching Fireworks from Boats, 1849

Comments - Terrific summer scene of beauties enjoying the fireworks from boats on the Sumida River. At right, a woman leans against the cabin of a pleasure boat, smiling as she looks up, the breeze blowing the blue and white towel in her hand. Inside the cabin, a companion creeps forward to see the display as sparks spiral through the night sky, while her friend trails her hand in the water. At left, a beauty leans backwards in her vessel, the pillar of a bridge rising at left. The water is crowded with boats seen in dark silhouette, and at right, red lanterns glow from beneath the eaves of teahouses along the shore. An attractive design.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)
