Confrontation under a Plum Tree, 1875

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a group gathered beneath a blossoming plum tree with two men confronting each other. At left, a yakko or footman grimaces angrily, leaning forward aggressively and gripping a sandal in his outstretched hand. The samurai in the center glares back at him, thrusting his hands out at his sides. He wears matching coat and kimono patterned with cranes in flight. The fellow at lower left carries a bonsai pine tree in a striped planter, while the beauty Oka carries a rake over her shoulder, smiling and unaware of the conflict going on. The left panel includes Ichikawa Sadanji as the yakko and Onoe Kikugoro. The center panel includes Nakamura Kanjaku as Oka, the daughter of Inaka, and Nakamura Shikan. The right panel features Bando Hikosaburo. Nice large figures with lively color, set off by a deep red background. Includes embossing in the cranes' feathers.
