Original Shunsho (1726 - 1792) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scowling Actor

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of an actor scowling angrily as he looks over his shoulder, his sleeve held to his chin. He wears a tan coat with a design of maple leaves, pine branches, and crosshatches over a tan kimono with the same pine branch and crosshatch motifs, tied with a white sash. The three concentric rice measure crest of the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors is just visible at his shoulder. A handsome, nicely detailed design from one of the masters of Japanese kabuki prints.

Artist - Shunsho (1726 - 1792)

Image Size - 12 1/4" x 5 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. A couple small losses at edge, a couple holes, thinning spot, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few light creases at edges, slight rubbing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
