Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Autumn, 1851

Series; The Four Seasons

Autumn, 1851 - Dramatic scene of a crazed woman attacking a young beauty in an abandoned temple, gripping a knife behind her back as she moves toward her victim. The frightened beauty holds up her straw hat in defense as she turns away from her attacker, while Prince Genji watches her with a smile at left, apparently unaware of the danger. A monk crouches behind the old woman, looking up with a scowl as he holds a string of prayer beads. Above him, a full moon glows in the night sky above the autumn grasses and blossoms. The walls are cracked with missing plaster and the shoji panel is torn. Grass grows up through the floorboards and vines creep in through the window. An intriguing subject with the eerie ruined building providing a great atmospheric setting.
