Genji and Beauties Cultivating Silkworms, 1866

Comments - Wonderful triptych showing Prince Genji observing beauties engaged in the process of raising silkworms. He stands in the center holding an image of the patron deity of sericulture, smiling as the beauty kneeling beside him uses a feather to gently brush the eggs from a sheet of paper. At right, a beauty kneels next to a wooden board laid across a tub, chopping mulberry leaves to feed the insects. At lower left, women pluck the cocoons from mulberry branches, piling them into baskets. The round window in the center frames a lovely view of Mt. Fuji, with small boats dotting the water. A great look at this traditional activity, with an attractive setting and vibrant color.

Artist - Fusatane (active circa 1850 - 1870)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight separation along vertical fold near edge of right panel, stitching holes along one side, a few small wormholes, repaired. Soiling and slight rubbing near edges, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
