Comments - Fantastic triptych illustrating the valiant warrior Nitta Tadatsune encountering a giant serpent while exploring a cave inside Mt. Fuji. The amazing image of the snake coiling through the scene and threatening to strike, with mouth open and tongue flashing creates a dramatic effect. Tadatsune fearlessly thrusts a flaming torch at the creature as he leans over the bank of a swiftly flowing river. The goddess Kannon (or alternately, the spirit of Mt. Fuji) appears at left, rays of red light radiating warmth across the dark cave. Unlike the retainers accompanying him, Tadatsune is not afraid of her and she praises his courage. At right, a fellow samurai has tumbled to the ground in fear at the apparition. A terrific composition, realistically drawn and wonderfully detailed, with burnishing in the black court cap, fine bokashi shading, and a dusting of mica over the snake's belly in the center panel. An incredible scene by one of Yoshitoshi's students, Shirai Toshinobu, also known as Kuniume. A great depiction of this legendary encounter.
