The Takanawa Steam Railway, Tokyo, 1870

Comments - Fantastic view of a train on the Takanawa Steam Railway in Tokyo, clouds of smoke rising from the steam engine as it chugs along. Passengers can be seen in one of the cars, with cargo stacked on flatcars behind. The railroad track curves around an embankment, with the street and bridge above crowded with travelers. Note the telegraph line running parallel to the street. A few people wait outside a station building at lower left, while others look down from the street above. A great illustration of the rapid modernization taking place in Japan during the Meiji era.
