Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Fighting in the Snow, 1864

A Parisian Collector -   From an interesting group of nearly 200 prints that we just purchased from a Parisian estate. Included are some rare Meiji triptychs as well as a large selection of single subjects by Yoshitoshi, Hiroshige II, Kyosai, Kuniyoshi, Toyokuni III and others. The collection is especially notable for condition. The prints are crisp, clean, and beautiful - none have been displayed. These old estates are a great source for clean, hard to find designs.

Comments - Fascinating kabuki scene of a young samurai thrusting out his umbrella in defense as he faces an angry, white-wigged warrior gripping a pole arm with the blade issuing from an ornate flower. The warrior wears an exotic costume with a blue floral tunic trimmed with white fringe over a tan robe and full checked pants, and red shoes, his long hair flowing past the middle of his back. Dressed in a thistle pattern kamishimo, the samurai reacts with a worried frown, using one of his tall wooden geta clogs to pin the blade of another attacker to the ground. At left, a beauty with a yellow robe over her head holds a naginata, a suit of armor visible beneath her black kimono. Snow falls heavily against the night sky behind them. A fascinating subject with attractive color and wonderful detail, including embossing in the white hair and fringe.
