Sawamura Tanosuke as Ohatsu, 1862

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tanosuke as Ohatsu, the loyal maid to the junior lady-in-waiting Onoe. When the senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji challenges Onoe to a practice match in martial arts, secretly hoping to best her, Ohatsu takes Onoe's place and wins the contest. Here, she looks warily to the side as she grips a wooden practice sword, pushing up the sleeve of her blue kimono patterned with wavy stripes. Her hair is simply arranged in a smooth bun with just a few ornaments. A nice design with a rich deep blue background.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few small holes, repaired. Toning and creasing, slight soiling, stain at top edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
