Five Beauties in Striking Kimono, 1876

Comments - Handsome kabuki illustration of five beauties in the guise of otokodate or street knights, dressed in striking kimono patterned with different kinds of birds. The woman at upper left has a heron flying through snow on her robe, and she holds a branch decorated with lucky symbols for the New Year. The beauty sitting below wears a blue kimono with descending geese and a full moon. The other designs include swallows and a crane in flight above splashing waves and tie-dyed turtle motifs. Three of the women carry Western style umbrellas. A colorful design, the figures nicely set off by the deep red background.
