Scene from the Higashiyama Storybook, 1861

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "The Higashiyama Storybook," based on a true story. The local mayor Asakura Togo decided to petition the shogun directly for tax relief for his impoverished town, bypassing the crooked governor. He knows that doing so will mean the death penalty for him. Here, Togo attempts to say goodbye to his family with a distraught expression, his oldest son tugging on his sword and his middle son clutching his leg, trying to prevent his leaving. In the center, Togo's wife cradles their youngest son to her chest. Outside the home at left, a boatman attempts to fight off guards who have come for Togo, using a board as a weapon, his ferryboat waiting at the shore. Ichikawa Kodanji IV appears as Asakura Togo. A handsome subject with a nicely detailed setting and expressive figures.
