Series; Thirty-Two Aspects of Women

Hot: the appearance of a wealthy housewife in the Bunsei era, No. 8 - One of the most unusual and fascinating prints in the series, a beautiful woman is being treated with "moxa" pellets of slow burning material that operate on a principle similar to acupuncture. This is a painful process and can leave scars, but was considered both healing and cleansing. There is an erotic overtone to the design in that her entire back is exposed and her grimace in pain has suggestive overtones. A fantastic and famous Yoshitoshi print with beautiful detail in the rich kimono fabrics and the simulated burl wood grain of the covered hibachi she leans over.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)
