Original Shunko (1743 - 1812) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ichikawa Komazo

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Kamezo, frowning unhappily as he looks over his shoulder while pushing up his sleeve. He only has one arm through his coat, worn over a black kimono with the right sleeve torn off, leaving a jagged edge at the shoulder and revealing a light colored under robe with an embossed pattern of the Ichikawa crest. The coat is also embossed. A curtain hands in the doorway at left, and the wall at right features a decorative inset of tree branches. An intriguing image with additional embossing in the coat. The British Museum identifies this print as a design by Shunko.
