Moon, 1848

Series; Snow, Moon, Flower

Moon, 1848 - Lovely triptych depicting three beauties relaxing and enjoying a garden. The woman at left is returning from the bath, carrying a blue and white robe under her arm. A companion sitting on the porch smiles in greeting as she approaches. The beauty at right wears an informal cotton kimono with an intricate tie-dyed pattern, and she leans against the doorway, her hands clasped around her knees. A tray on the floor nearby holds a kettle and cups, with a dish of food nearby. The round shoji window stands in for a moon in the scene, with the beauty's head seen in silhouette. Most interesting are the shadows cast on the ground by the two women at left, an effect rarely seen in Edo era woodblocks. A beautiful design we've never come across before.
