Awabi Divers Triptych

Comments - A spectacular reprint of a rare Utamaro subject depicting a group of beauties watching awabi divers at work diving for shells in the rolling waters off the coast. One swimmer hands a shell to a companion on the boat, gripping her knife between her teeth. Another swims underwater, prying a shell loose. On the shore at left, a small boy toddles toward a crab, his older sister hurrying forward to keep him from getting hurt. At right a woman leans forward to watch the diver, shielding her hand with her eyes. A wonderful subject, beautifully drawn with fine detail and soft coloring. Would make a lovely display.
