Yugyoji Temple at Fujisawa, circa 1833 - 1834

Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido

Hiroshige’s Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido - In 1832, Hiroshige first traveled from his home in Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto along the Tokaido road. The journey was an eye opening and life changing experience for him. As an urban man of Edo he had experienced life mainly in the capital. He immediately returned to Edo after the trip and began his masterwork woodblock series from the sketches he had made on his journey. Hiroshige's Tokaido prints are an opportunity to be transported back in time to see this world as Hiroshige did in the shadow of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Yugyoji Temple at Fujisawa, circa 1833 - 1834 - Wonderful view of Fujisawa, with an arched bridge over a stream leading to the village. On the hill beyond the Yugyoji Temple is nestled among the hills. In the foreground, a torii gate leads to the Benten Shrine at Enoshima. The station is crowded with travelers and pilgrims visiting these famous religious sites, including a group of blind men approaching the gate. An interesting composition with the edge of the road and bridge curving around into the center of the design and leading the eye across the page. Nicely detailed and colored with fine bokashi shading.
