Fashionable Spring Herb-gathering, 1863

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji and a group of women on an outing to gather herbs in early spring. The nobleman relaxes on a cloth-covered platform at right, grinning back over his shoulder as a beauty refills his sake cup. The princess in the center smiles back at him, dressed in a blue kimono with a design of kusudama or floral ornaments with long ribbons. At left, two young girls crouch down beside their baskets as they fill them with greenery, another woman joining them. Plum trees dotted with white blossoms and buds frame a view of the river beyond. A lovely subject with nice detail in the elegant clothing and a handsome natural setting. Includes embossing in the white kimono trim.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
